Newton Primary School

Rooted in love and care

Class 1

Welcome to Class 1!

Class 1 is a class of Reception and Year 1 children. Our teacher is Mr Turner, and we have lots of lovely additional adults who help us learn – Miss Boyd teaches us one afternoon each week, and we have a brilliant teaching assistant called Mrs Jackson, who helps to teach and support our learning every day. We understand that you may have lots of questions to ask so feel free to come in and ask us!

Our new topic for this half term is ‘Tis the season!’ We will be learning more about the different seasons and weather as our Science focus. Also, as part of geography and history, we will be learning more about our local area that we live in. We may even be going on a local walking trip to visit and navigate around our local village! This will relate to our theme in computing, where are learning about using technology to input programmes into robots that move around! In Art, we are starting a new topic about sculptures, experimenting with what we can mold our artwork from.

These are all aspects of our very creative curriculum that we incorporate in every lesson. Some lessons are adapted for the EYFS curriculum, as our reception approach to learning is more hands-on than the Year 1’s. For more information, please feel free to speak to us at anytime.

Class 1 is a lovely, colourful, happy classroom for us to learn in. We have a comfy Reading jungle, a weather station role play area, a computer corner, a Creative Station, a small world area, a Maths table, a Funky Fingers area, a construction centre and a large carpet space with an accessible interactive white board. Children also get the opportunity to work in our outside space, which has many further opportunities to learn, such as a sand area, water tray, a mud kitchen and many more!

We encourage parents to read regularly with their children and to record this in their reading diary too. We also use our reading diaries’ as a form of communication, and should you need to send a message, you can do so in the diary. We expect children to bring their book bags every day, along with these reading diaries.

Our PE days are Wednesday (indoor) and Friday (outdoor); however we like PE kits to remain in school throughout the term so we can take advantage of opportunities on other days.

We also have a well-travelled friend in Class 1, and that is Benedict Bear! He has been to many different countries and places around the world, and is always looking for a new adventure. Benedict takes turns to go home with us for the weekend and on holidays, and while he stays with us, children complete his diary and share about what he got up to in school! He comes back into school on Thursdays ready to give to someone else for Friday!
