Welcome to Anning Class!
Anning Class is a class of Reception and Year 1 children. Our teacher is Miss Grimes Thomas and we have lots of lovely additional adults who help us learn – we have a brilliant teaching assistant called Mrs Jackson, who helps to teach and support our learning every day. We also have Ms Palmer, Ms Crawford or Miss Boyd teach us one afternoon each week who is fabulous too! We understand that you may have lots of questions to ask so feel free to come in and ask us!
These are all aspects of our very creative curriculum that we incorporate in every lesson. Some lessons are adapted for the EYFS curriculum, as our reception approach to learning is more hands-on than the Year 1’s. For more information, please feel free to speak to us at anytime.
Anning Class is a lovely, colourful, happy classroom for us to learn in. We have a cosy Reading Rocket, a role play area, a Creative area, a small world area, a maths area, a phonics area, a construction centre and a large carpet space with an accessible interactive white board.
Children also get the opportunity to work in our outside space, which has many further opportunities to learn, such as a sand area, water tray, a mud kitchen and many more!
We encourage parents to read regularly with their children and to record this in their reading diary too. We also use our reading diaries’ as a form of communication, and should you need to send a message, you can do so in the diary. We expect children to bring their book bags every day, along with these reading diaries. Children will also have the opportunity to read in school to an adult at least once a week, this may be one-to-one or through a guided reading group.
Our PE day is Tuesday however we like PE kits to remain in school throughout the term so we can take advantage of opportunities on other days.
The children are taught systematic, synthetic phonics in school. This is taught through a mixture of games, adult-led activities and child-led activities. We also have a phonics bear in Anning class called Phoebe. Phoebe takes turns to go home with us for the weekend and on holidays, and while she stays with us, children complete her diary and share about what games they enjoyed. She comes back into school on Thursdays ready to give to someone else for Friday!
