History is usually taught as an integral part of topic work. Our aim is to capture and foster the child’s interest in the past. We provide a variety of opportunities for children to investigate historical resources. These will include a study of documents, artefacts and photographs. Projects often include visits to historic sites and museums. Role play is used to make the subject live.
Appropriate computer programs are utilised and, where possible, children talk to adults about their own memories of the past. We teach the children how to extract information from source and archive material using their local libraries and our excellent school library for research.
Our studies progress from familiar situations and local history to that of a more distant time, encouraging a sense of chronology and the ability to view lifestyles in terms of work, leisure, culture, clothes and homes.
