Curriculum

One of the most important changes in education brought about by the Education Reform Act, 1988 was the introduction of the National Curriculum for children aged 5-16. The National Curriculum consists of 10 subjects and nine of these are statutory in primary education.

The core curriculum subjects of English, Maths and Science are taught alongside the other foundation subjects of Design Technology, History, Geography, Art, ICT,Music and PE. The inclusion of a Modern Language in the curriculum does not become statutory until secondary education although some of the children in our school are already beginning to learn French.
The curriculum also encompasses Religious Education and Personal,Social and Health Education focusing on the development of the children's moral and spiritual understanding.

During their time at school children will work as a member of a class, a group or individually. The curriculum is taught in subject lessons for part of the time and also through cross curricular topics. This teaching is enhanced by trips out to various places related to the topic or by having visitors into school who provide a memorable and valued learing experience.

The topics are planned to ensure continuity and progression, developing the children's knowledge and skills in the context of a theme. The children work from first hand experience and other relevant sources which capture and maintain their interest.
